 A kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and food preparation and where the dishes are washed: in a dwelling or in a commercial establishment.

A kitchen is a room for cooking and food preparation. with a stove, a sink, a refrigerator,  a microwave oven, a dishwasher, and other electric appliances.

 A single-file kitchen has all of these along one wall; the work triangle degenerates to a line.

The double-file kitchen has two rows of cabinets on opposite walls, containing stove and refrigerator.

•  L-kitchen, the cabinets occupy two adjacent walls.
•  U-kitchen has cabinets along three walls, typically with the sink at the base of the "U".
•  G-kitchen has cabinets along three walls, like the U-kitchen
•  Block kitchen is a more recent development, typically found in open kitchens.
